The Engineer Corps

The Engineer Corps was established on the 1st of October 1924 and is responsible for ensuring that the Defence Forces can live,maneouver, and operate wherever we may be deployed.

Mobility/Counter Mobility

Engineer Corps troops are qualified soldiers, combat engineers, and technicians.  In addition to all-arms capabilities we provide the essential specialist skills to ensure we can cross obstacles to ensure freedom of movement for our forces (mobility), and preventing the same to an enemy (counter mobility).  To do this, we provide the essential specialist skills to:

  • Bridge Gaps
  • Construct Routes
  • Clear Obstacles (natural & manmade)
  • Employ Explosive Demolitions
  • Conduct Engineer Specialist Search and Clearance
Force Protection

Both at home and overseas the Engineer Corps provide Force Protection measures, constructing fortifications and operational bases.  We also provide essential life support capabilities such as:

  • Power generation
  • Water Purification
  • Waste Water Treatment
  • Air Conditioning
  • Refridgeration
  • Fire Fighting
Infrastructure

The Engineer Corps is responsible for Defence Force built infrastructure such as barracks, training areas, airfields, and naval installations.  This includes:

  • Solution Development
  • Design Tasks
  • Contract Preparation
  • Tender Preparation
  • Project Management
  • Procurement
Sustainability

The Engineer Corps drive the sustainability agenda within the Defence Forces working to achieve the targets set out in the EU Greendeal (climate neutrality by 2050), aswell as the overarching aims of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.  Since 2009, the Defence Forces have reduced our carbon emissions by almost a third.  We are the only military organisation worldwide that have achieved the Certified International Energy Management Standard ISO 50001.

Overseas Operations

Corps of Engineer personnel have been deployed overseas  to Congo, Cyprus, Lebanon, Angola,  Somalia, Rwanda, Honduras, Bosnia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kosovo, Liberia, Sudan, Ivory Coast, Afghanistan and Chad. The Corps has been increasingly used in expeditionary roles, pre deploying to Kosovo, Liberia and Chad to construct Camps in advance for contingents of more than 400 troops.
