LÉ James Joyce on OP SOPHIA

The Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces Vice Admiral Mark Mellett DSM, will bid farewell to the crew of LÉ James Joyce prior to their departure to the Mediterranean at 11am on Friday 06th of July 2018. LÉ James Joyce will be the second Naval Service vessel to deploy to the Mediterranean as part of Operation Sophia this year, replacing the LÉ Samuel Beckett.

Commanded by Lieutenant Commander Martin Brett, a total of 57 members of the Defence Forces have been preparing LÉ James Joyce (P62) for an extended deployment since receiving notice that they would be sailing to assist with the EU mission, Operation Sophia.

Members of the media are invited to attend; there will be excellent opportunities for photographs and interviews from the event taking place in Haulbowline.

LÉ James Joyce is the third Naval Service vessel to deploy under Operation Sophia, LÉ Niamh deployed in late 2017 and LÉ Samuel Beckett is currently on mission having deployed in March.
