60 Years Peacekeeping1958 - 2018

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of Ireland's first Peacekeeping deployment in 1958.

Since then, Ireland have maintained the longest unbroken service on the front line of peace with over 70,000 individual tours of duty completed by the men and women of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

This year, we remember the 87 members of the Defence Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Peace.

Tuesday 19th April 2016 - Pre-Deployment Mission Readiness Exercise.

190 Defence Forces soldiers from the 53rd Infantry Group are undergoing mission readiness training in preparation for the unit’s deployment to the United Nations Interim Force Lebanon (UNIFIL).

The training, taking place in the Glen of Imaal, Co. Wicklow, will test the unit’s operational capability by putting the soldiers through their paces in a series of simulated incidents that the unit could face during their 6 month tour of duty.

The 53rd Infantry Group, comprising a Mechanised Infantry Company and a Support Group, will deploy as part of an Irish/Finnish Battalion and will carry out peacekeeping duties under Chapter 6 of the United Nations Charter.

Their duties will include monitoring the Blue Line between Lebanon and Israel and patrolling their designated Area of Operations.
