Tuesday, 02nd May 2017 - Army Bomb Disposal Team Make Safe Historic Munition.
Earlier today, following a request from An Garda Síochána, an Army Bomb Disposal Team made safe an artillery shell in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal.
The Army Bomb Disposal Team arrived on scene at 2.15pm. To ensure public safety, they established a cordon and evacuated local houses before conducting an initial assessment of the munition. On completion of the assessment the shell was transported to a secure military location for further examination and disposal. The scene was declared safe at 3.15pm.
Historic munitions from early 20th century conflicts can be encountered from time to time. Should members of the public find such munitions they are advised to maintain a safe distance, inform An Garda Síochána, who in turn will request Defence Forces assistance.
Other types of call outs would include conventional munition destruction such as old grenades discovered by members of the public, unstable chemicals and also suspect devices found to be hoaxes.
