The Defence Forces is now accepting applications for General Service in both the Army and Naval Service.

Army applicants must be at least 18 years old and under the age of 25 years of age on the closing date for applications.

Naval Service applicants must be at least 18 years old and under the age of 27 years of age on the closing date for applications.

Both Competitions will close on Sunday 22nd April 2018.

Sunday 26 April 2015 - Army Bomb Disposal Team Rendered Safe a Viable IED.

An Army Bomb Disposal Team rendered safe a viable Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in the Macroom Road area of Coolock this afternoon.

The Defence Forces deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team after a suspect device was found outside a private residence.

A cordon and road closures were put in place for public safety and a number of nearby houses were evacuated.

The team arrived on scene at 1.25 pm. The device was made safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion and was taken away for further examination. It was later confirmed as viable.

Items of an evidential nature will be handed over to the Gardaí­ to assist them with their investigation.

The scene was declared safe at 2.20 pm.

This is the 39th call out so far in 2015 to 9 viable devices. Last year there was 141 call outs to 52 viable devices.
