Friday 16 November 2012 - Army Bomb Disposal Team Makes Safe Unstable Chemical.

An Army Bomb Disposal Team made safe a quantity of the unstable chemical Dinitrophenylhydrazine this evening in Douglas, Cork.

The Defence Forces deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team to Christ the King Secondary School, Douglas following a request from the Gardai.

The Team arrived on scene at 4 pm and made safe the unstable chemical which was found in a school laboratory during a routine audit. The chemical was removed to a safe location where it was made safe through the use of a controlled explosion. The scene was declared safe at 4.35 pm and the team returned to base.

Dinitrophenylhydrazine is a chemical re-agent routinely used in laboratories around the country that can become unstable over time.

Other types of callouts for EOD Teams would include improvised explosive devices, conventional munition destruction such as old artillery shells discovered by members of the public, and also suspect devices found to be hoaxes.
