60 Years Peacekeeping1958 - 2018

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of Ireland's first Peacekeeping deployment in 1958.

Since then, Ireland have maintained the longest unbroken service on the front line of peace with over 70,000 individual tours of duty completed by the men and women of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

This year, we remember the 87 members of the Defence Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Peace.

14th of June 2016 - Death of Lieutenant General David Stapleton DSM.

The death has occurred of the former Defence Forces Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General David Stapleton DSM, who died peacefully at his home yesterday, 13th June 2016.

Lt Gen Stapleton DSM joined the Defence Forces as a member of the 30th Cadet Class in 1955. He held a number of significant appointments throughout his career and was awarded a Distinguished Service Medal (DSM) for his outstanding service.

Prior to his elevation to the appointment of Defence Forces Chief of Staff, Lt Gen Stapleton DSM served as the Force Commander with the UNDOF* mission in the Middle East. Lt Gen Stapleton DSM made a considerable contribution to the formation and development of the Representative Association of Commissioned Officers (RACO) in its formative years as the association’s first President.

*The UNDOF mission was established in 1974 to supervise the implementation of an Area of Separation and two equal zones of limited forces and armaments in the Golan Heights region between Syria and Israel.
