60 Years Peacekeeping1958 - 2018

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of Ireland's first Peacekeeping deployment in 1958.

Since then, Ireland have maintained the longest unbroken service on the front line of peace with over 70,000 individual tours of duty completed by the men and women of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

This year, we remember the 87 members of the Defence Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Peace.

13 Jan 2015 -Army Bomb Disposal Team Render Safe a Viable Device.

An Army Bomb Disposal Team rendered safe a viable Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Mullingar in the early hours of this morning.

After a request from the Gardaí­, the Army Bomb Disposal Team deployed to a residential area in Ardilaun, Mullingar. The team arrived on scene at 3 am. A cordon and traffic restrictions were put in place for public safety, while a number of nearby houses were evacuated.

The suspect item was removed to a safe military location for further testing and the scene was declared safe at 4 am. The device was later determined to have been viable.

All items of an evidential nature will be handed over to the Gardaí­ to assist them with their investigation.

There have been 5 requests for Army Bomb Disposal assistance so far this year, however this is the first to a viable device. Last year, there were 141 call outs to 52 viable devices.
