60 Years Peacekeeping1958 - 2018

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of Ireland's first Peacekeeping deployment in 1958.

Since then, Ireland have maintained the longest unbroken service on the front line of peace with over 70,000 individual tours of duty completed by the men and women of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

This year, we remember the 87 members of the Defence Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Peace.

12th May 2015 - Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces visits LÉ EITHNE.

On the 12th of May 2015 the Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces Lieutenant General Conor O'Boyle addressed the personnel of the LÉ EITHNE at Haulbowline Naval Base in advance of their upcoming deployment.

On the same date the Government approved a proposal from the Minister for Defence, Mr. Simon Coveney, T.D. for the dispatch of an Irish Naval vessel with a crew comprising approximately sixty-five (65) personnel of the Permanent Defence Forces to undertake humanitarian search and rescue tasks in the Mediterranean, subject to finalisation of appropriate arrangements with the Italian authorities.
