Tuesday 23rd of May 2017 - Deployment of LÉ Eithne (P31) to the Mediterranean.

The Minister with Responsibility for Defence, Mr. Paul Kehoe, T.D., will attend the departure of LÉ Eithne from the Naval Base, Haulbowline, on Tuesday the 23rd of May at 11am.

Commanded by Commander Brian FitzGerald, a total of 72 members of the Defence Forces have been preparing the ship for an extended deployment since receiving notice that they would be sailing to assist with the humanitarian mission, Operation PONTUS.

This is the first Naval Service deployment to the Mediterranean under Operation PONTUS in 2017.

There will be an opportunity to interview the Minister with Responsibility for Defence, Mr. Paul Kehoe, T.D., Commander FitzGerald and a selection of the crew before the ship sets sail.

Since L.É. Eithne first deployed to the Mediterranean with Operation PONTUS on the 16th of May 2015, Defence Forces personnel have rescued 15,621 migrants.
