60 Years Peacekeeping1958 - 2018

Friday 22nd December 2017 - Christmas Messages.

The Defence Forces currently has 600 military personnel serving in 13 different countries around the world. In 2017, over 1,400 Defence Forces personnel rotated through 13 counties and one sea on a range of peace support operations.

Our personnel can only do the important work of peace because of the support they receive from their families and friends at home when they deploy. Of course, this separation is most acutely felt over the Christmas period.

Below are some messages that our personnel serving overseas wish to send to their families and friends at home this Christmas.

Our largest troop missions are the 379 personnel serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the 136 personnel with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) on the Golan Heights in Syria.

There are also a number of Defence Forces personnel deployed in the service of peace to 11 other countries including Mali, The Democratic Republic of Congo and Western Sahara.

In September, the Naval Service joined EUNAVFOR Operation Sophia. This is the first time an Irish Naval Ship has deployed on a multinational mission.
