Wednesday 27th July 2016 - Army Bomb Disposal Team Removes Historic Artillery Shell.

A historic Artillery Shell found in a residential area of Blackmiller Hill, Co.Kildare this afternoon has been safely removed by the Army Bomb Disposal Team.

The Defence Forces deployed the Army Bomb Disposal Team in response to a request from An Garda Síochána after a suspicious device was found in the residential area.

A cordon was put in place, a road was closed and some local residents were evacuated from their homes as a safety precaution. The team arrived on scene at 4.00pm, safely isolated the shell and removed it to a safe military location for further examination. The scene was declared safe at 5.07pm.

Legacy munitions from conflicts in the early 20th century can be encountered from time to time, should members of the public find such devices they are advised to maintain a safe distance, inform the Gardaí, who in turn will request Defence Forces assistance.

Other types of call outs would include conventional munition destruction such as old grenades discovered by members of the public, unstable chemicals and also suspect devices found to be hoaxes.
