Wednesday 24 June 2015 - Army Bomb Disposal Team Rendered Safe a Viable IED.

An Army Bomb Disposal Team rendered safe a viable Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Ballymahon, Longford tonight.

The Defence Forces deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team after a suspect device was found by Gardaí­ during a search of a private vehicle on a rural road approximately 4 kilometres outside Ballymahon. A cordon and road closures were in place for public safety.

The team arrived on scene at 09.11 pm. The viable device was made safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion.

Items of an evidential nature have been handed over to the Gardaí­ to assist them with their investigation. The scene was declared safe at 10.35 pm.

Other types of call outs would include conventional munition destruction such as old grenades discovered by members of the public, unstable chemicals and also suspect devices found to be hoaxes.
