Troops from the 105th Battalion deploy to Lebanon.

230 members of the 105th Battalion will deploy to Lebanon in the early hours of tomorrow, 17th of November, to begin a six-month tour of duty.

The deployment represents the first of two troop movements which will see a total of 440 members of the 105th Battalion taking up Peacekeeping duties with the UNIFIL mission. The second half of the Battalion will depart Ireland on the 27th of November 2011. 

Commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Philip Brennan, the 105th Battalion will take over duty from the 104th Battalion, who have been in Lebanon since June.

The role of Irish troops in the UNIFIL mission involves monitoring the cessation of hostilities, assisting the Lebanese Armed Forces (including extensive mobile patrolling throughout the Irish area of operations) and helping to ensure humanitarian access to the civilian population.
