60 Years Peacekeeping1958 - 2018

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of Ireland's first Peacekeeping deployment in 1958.

Since then, Ireland have maintained the longest unbroken service on the front line of peace with over 70,000 individual tours of duty completed by the men and women of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

This year, we remember the 87 members of the Defence Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Peace.

Thursday 15 March 2012 - Army Bomb Disposal Teams Make Safe Viable IED.

Army Bomb Disposal Teams have made safe a viable Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Dublin and a World War One era grenade in Leitrim overnight.

In the first incident, the Defence Forces deployed a team in response to request from Gardai after a Mills Type Grenade was found in the garden of a private residence in Manorhamilton, County Leitrim.

The Team arrived on scene at 8.20pm and removed the grenade to a secure military location where it was destroyed by means of a controlled explosion. The scene was declared safe at 9pm.

In the second incident, the Defence Forces deployed a team to Tallaght in Dublin following the discovery of a suspect device outside a private residence. The team arrived on scene at 12.50am and rendered the device safe by means of controlled explosion in location. The area was declared safe at 3.40am and the team returned to base.

The Defence Forces have deployed Bomb Disposal Squads to seven incidents in the last four days, five in Dublin and one each in Cork and Leitrim. There have been 45 call outs so far this year which included 19 IEDs. Other types of callouts would include conventional munition destruction such as old artillery shells discovered by members of the public, unstable chemicals and also suspect devices found to be hoaxes.
