60 Years Peacekeeping1958 - 2018

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of Ireland's first Peacekeeping deployment in 1958.

Since then, Ireland have maintained the longest unbroken service on the front line of peace with over 70,000 individual tours of duty completed by the men and women of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

This year, we remember the 87 members of the Defence Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Peace.

Sunday 25th June 2017 - LÉ Eithne Rescue Operation Update – 712* migrants On-board.

Earlier today, while on patrol LÉ Eithne located and rescued 183* migrants from two vessels approximately 40km off the North-West coast of Tripoli.

Thereafter, LÉ Eithne was tasked with assisting an NGO vessel which was in the process of a rescue. Rescue operations took place throughout the day, and a total of 606* migrants were rescued from a number of Platforms in Distress (PIDs). A further 106* migrants were transferred from the NGO Vessel, Von Hestia onto LÉ Eithne.

The 712* migrants on board received food, water and medical treatment where required.

LÉ Eithne has now been tasked by the Italian Maritime Rescue Co-Ordination Centre to transport the migrants to a designated ‘Port of Safety’, where they will be handed over to the Italian Authorities.
