Monday 09 November 2015 - Army Bomb Disposal Team Rendered Safe a Viable IED.

An Army Bomb Disposal Team rendered safe a viable Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Rathfarnham, Dublin this morning.

The Defence Forces deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team on request from An Garda Síochána, after a suspect device was found in undergrowth by local workers. A cordon was established and surrounding houses were evacuated

.The EOD team arrived on scene at 10.30 am and made the device safe at the scene. It was then removed to a secure military location for further examination where it was confirmed as viable. The scene was declared safe at 11.10 am.

Material was handed over to the Gardaí to assist them with their investigation

.There has now been 124 EOD call outs to 33 viable devices so far this year. In 2014 there were 141 EOD calls outs to 53 viable devices.

Other types of call outs would include conventional munition destruction such as old grenades discovered by members of the public, unstable chemicals and also suspect devices found to be hoaxes.
