Ministerial Review of Lebanon bound 104th Infantry Battalion in Athlone.

The Minister for Defence Mr Alan Shatter TD will carry out a review of the 104th Inf Bn in Custume Bks Athlone on 02 June 11 at 1400hrs.

The 440 members of the Bn will parade on the square, conduct a blessing of thier colours (flag) after which the Mayor of Athlone and then the Minister of Defence will take a salute from the Battalion which is under the Command of Lt Col Frank Bolger.

The Battalion will then conduct a march past.

The 104th Inf Battalion, as stated, will be under the command of Lt Col Frank Bolger. He is originally from Limerick. He has previously served principally in the 2nd Eastern Brigade and his previous appointments include, Officer Commanding 5th Inf Battalion and OIC 'A' Administration DFHQ. He has extensive overseas experience having previously served in Bosnia, Liberia, Western Sahara and 2 previous tours of duty in Lebanon. He is married to Patricia and has 2 sons, Eoghan and Colin and lives in Celbridge, Co. Kildare.

The 104th Inf Battalion is primarily formed from units of the 4th Western Bde. The unit is represented with members of all combat, combat support and combat service support corps. Members are drwan from each brigade, the Air Corps, Naval Service, DFTC and DFHQ.

The 104th Inf  Battalion will deploy in 2 x mechanised Infantry company's and a Recce Company with arnmour, anti-armour, fire support assets and an extraction capability.

The UNIFIL mission will involve the protection of civilians, extensive mobile patrolling throughout the Irish area of operations, ground holding and monitoring along the Blue Line.

UNIFIL AO is divided into Sector West (incl Irish AO) and Sector East. The Irish AO will measure some 140 sq km extending from Tibnin in southern Lebanon to the Blue Line along the border with Israel. It will encompass 3 posts and additional responsibility for the major centre of population Bint Jubayl.
