Launch of Military Archives website.

Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Sean McCann, will launch the first Military Archives website www.militaryarchives.ie tomorrow, Monday 12 December, 2011 at Cathal Brugha Barracks, Rathmines. Military Archives is the official place of deposit for the archival records of the Defence Forces, Department of Defence and the Army Pensions Board.

This website will be the first time Military Archives content and collections will be available online. Although the institution has been in existence in its current form since the mid 1980s, it has never before had its own website, www.militaryarchives.ie will be the sister website of the award winning Defence Forces website www.military.ie.

By March of next year, Military Archives, in conjunction with the National Archives, will launch the Bureau of Military History Collection, 1913 to 1921 online, including 36,000 pages of Witness Statements, digitised and fully word searchable. This will be followed by the first release of the Military Service Pensions Project material which will provide a major and never before seen insight into the 1916 Rising and the War of Independence in particular.

These collections represent a major effort to provide access for members of the public to the military archival records of the state through the website and the public reading room at Military Archives.
