50th Anniversary of the 36th Infantry Battalion.
A Company, 36th Infantry Battalion will commemorate their unit's 50th Anniversary with a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the United Nations Plot at Glasnevin Cemetery at 9.45am on Sunday 11 December, 2011.
A Company, 36th Infantry Battalion served in the Congo between December 1961 and May 1962 gaining 14 Distinguished Service Medals (DSM) during their deployments and suffering four fatalities during their victorious 'Battle of the Tunnel' in Elizabethville within the first 10 days of their deployment.
Lieutenant Paddy Riordan DSM, Sergeant Paddy Mulcahy DSM, Corporal Mick Fallon and Private Andy Wickam were killed at the 'Battle of the Tunnel' in addition to 14 others being wounded; Corporal John Power died of natural causes in March 1962.
