31 January 2014 - Army Bomb Disposal Team Renders Safe a Viable Improvised Explosive Device.

An Army Bomb Disposal team rendered safe a viable Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in the Carrickmacross area of Co. Monaghan early this afternoon. The Defence Forces deployed the Team in response to a request from the Gardaí­ after a suspect device was discovered near a vehicle.

The Team arrived on scene at 10.30 am and examined the device in situ. A cordon and road closures were put in place for public safety. The viable IED was rendered safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion.

The scene was declared safe at 12.30 pm and the Team returned to base. The remains of the device have been handed over to assist Gardaí­ with their investigation into the incident. This was the tenth call out of an Bomb Disposal Team in 2014 dealing with five viable devices so far this year.
