60 Years Peacekeeping1958 - 2018

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of Ireland's first Peacekeeping deployment in 1958.

Since then, Ireland have maintained the longest unbroken service on the front line of peace with over 70,000 individual tours of duty completed by the men and women of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

This year, we remember the 87 members of the Defence Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Peace.

23rd December 2015 - The Taoiseach, Mr Enda Kenny T.D. recently visited the 50th and the 51st Infantry Group.

An Taoiseach Mr. Enda Kenny T.D., accompanied by the Minister For Defence Mr. Simon Coveney T.D., the Minister of State at the Dept of Defence Mr. Paul Kehoe T.D. and the Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces Vice Admiral Mark Mellett, DSM, recently visited the 50th and 51st Infantry Groups who are serving on Peace Keeping Operations in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the Golan Heights (UNDOF). 

An Taoiseach received a variety of operational briefs on the current security situation from Military Commanders including UNIFIL Force Commander Major General Luciano Portolano, 51st Infantry Group Commander Lt Col Brendan McGuinness, Deputy Force Commander (UNDOF) Brigadier General Tony Hanlon and the 50th Infantry Group Commander Lt Col Darragh McKevitt.

During An Taoiseach's address to the troops he wished them and their families a happy Christmas. He thanked them for the important role that they are playing in providing a Safe and Secure Environment for the people of South Lebanon and the area of separation between Israel and Syria.
