22 August 2015 - The Final Defence Forces Changing of the Guard Ceremony for 2015.

The Final Defence Forces Changing of the Guard ceremony for 2015 will take place on Saturday 22nd of August 2015 at midday at the National Memorial to Members of the Defence Forces who died in the Service of the State, Merrion Square Park, Dublin.

The Military Guard will involve members of the 6th Infantry Battalion, Custume Barracks, Athlone and the 27th Infantry Battalion, Aiken Barracks, Dundalk who will render honours as Unit Commanders, families and former comrades lay wreaths and remember those who died in service at home and overseas. The ceremony is the sixth in the series which has been taking place every Saturday since the 18th of July.

The National Memorial was unveiled by President Mary McAleese in November 2008 and is the National Memorial to members of the Defence Forces who died in the service of the State. It is a place of contemplation and remembrance, where families, relatives and members of the public can reflect on the sacrifices these soldiers, sailors and airmen and airwomen have made for this State.

The pyramid shape of the memorial, which was designed by Brian King, captures references to burial and is a standing testament to the dead. Within the pyramid, four bronze figures, representing all elements of the Defence Forces, stand guard over the eternal flame that emanates from the Defence Forces emblem, Óglaigh na hÉireann. The flame burns in perpetual memory of those members of the Defence Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of the State.

Over the summer the event has become a tourist attraction where members of the public have an opportunity to walk around the monument and take photographs whilst the soldiers are 'on post'.
