13 July 2016 - Defence Forces and Curragh race day this Sunday 17th July..

The Curragh will give their race day on Sunday 17th July a strong military theme to promote the close association between the Defence Forces and the Curragh racecourse.

The Defence Forces Race Day will feature eight races starting at 2pm including the Irish Stallion Farms Handicap for the Defence Forces Trophy, with the Chief of Staff Vice Admiral Mark Mellett, presenting the trophy to the winning owner. Other races include the Group 2 Kilboy Estate Stakes and Group 2 Friarstown Stud Minstrel Stakes.

Vice Admiral Mark Mellett, Chief of Staff Defence Forces commented, "The history of the military in the Curragh is inextricably linked with the equestrian community and the Curragh Racecourse. As Chief of Staff of the Irish Defence Forces, I am delighted to support this annual event which highlights this long standing relationship and may I take this opportunity to wish everyone an enjoyable day and continued success to the Curragh Racecourse”.

There will be great spectacle and pageantry throughout the afternoon with displays of current and vintage equipment, memorabilia featuring Ireland’s most iconic car, Michael Collins’ Sliabh Na mBan, while the Leinster Football Final will be shown on screens throughout the racecourse.

Evan Arkwright Commercial Manager of the Curragh Racecourse commented, “Our objective is to develop an annual race day to promote the excellent and very historic relationship between the Curragh and the Defence Forces, where their personnel both past and present can get together with the horse racing fraternity for a fun day out for all the family”

Present and past members of the Defence Forces will again free admission with a guest to the race day and there will be a BBQ area in the garden enclosure close to the parade ring for them to gather together. Under 16s are free.
