60 Years Peacekeeping1958 - 2018

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of Ireland's first Peacekeeping deployment in 1958.

Since then, Ireland have maintained the longest unbroken service on the front line of peace with over 70,000 individual tours of duty completed by the men and women of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

This year, we remember the 87 members of the Defence Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Peace.

10 January 2014- Army Bomb Disposal Team Renders Safe Viable IED.

An Army Bomb Disposal team rendered safe a viable improvised explosive device (IED) in the Belclare Area of Ballymun in the early hours of the morning. The Defence Forces deployed the Team in response to a request from the Gardaí­ after a suspect device was noted near a vehicle parked outside a private residence.

The Team arrived on scene at 1.10am and examined the device in situ. The Gardaí­ put a cordon in place and evacuated some nearby houses for public safety. The Team Leader rendered the viable device safe by means of a controlled explosion.  

The scene was declared safe at 3.30am and the Team returned to base. The remains of the device have now be handed over to assist Gardaí­ with their investigation into the incident.
