Family Support

The Personnel Support Service provides assistance to members and families in all regional areas. They provide 24-hour assistance in crisis situations in all military locations and will help with appropriate referrals if required during office hours. The after hours service can be accessed through your local Duty Officer. There are Chaplains connected to all units in Defence Forces who can provide support and appropriate referrals.

Personnel Support Services (PSS) have published a booklet as a guidance to personnel and their families prior to and during their deployment. The content of this booklet, which spans pre-deployment, coping with life at home, and the reunion, goes into considerable detail. However, it is presented in a very factual, practical and sensitive way. It can be read entirely or in part, as the situation requires. The important thing, however, is that it is read and that its guidance is carefully considered by all concerned. The material is based on our own knowledge and experience, as well as that of a number of other forces.

When a soldier is preparing for deployment overseas to any part of the world there are more than just the Military aspects of preparation to be dealt with. The needs of families and extended families must be taken into account before, during and following a mission.

Coping with Life at Home

Separation of family members due to overseas service, as we have said already, can be stressful. Individual family members can react differently as they are often subject to different worries, fears and anxieties before, during and after these separations.

The Re-Union

Personnel returning from an overseas tour of duty or going on leave from the mission area usually experience feelings of excitement, anticipation and sometimes anxiety. In the booklet guidance is given on how to cope with this situation.
