13th July 2017 - Naval Service Officer Commissioning Ceremony.

The Minister with Responsibility for Defence, Mr. Paul Kehoe T.D. and the Defence Forces’ Chief of Staff, Vice Admiral Mark Mellett DSM, will attend the Naval Service Officer Commissioning Ceremony, as well as meet the crew of LÉ WB Yeats prior to its deployment to the Mediterranean, in Haulbowline Naval Base, Cork on Friday, 14th July 2017, from 10.30am.

LÉ WB Yeats is deploying as part of Ireland’s response to the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean. After meeting the crew of LÉ WB Yeats, the Minister will attend the Naval Service Commissioning Ceremony of 6 new Officers.

It is a very important and proud day for the members of the 55th Naval Service Cadet Class as they are awarded their Commissions. This represents the successful completion of two years intensive military and nautical training.

The six Cadets have completed a very demanding, challenging and rewarding course of basic Officer training including diverse subjects such as navigation, seamanship, leadership, communications, marine engineering and naval warfare, while a strategic studies course was completed at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth.

The Cadets also completed sea time experience across the Naval Service fleet and commenced their first year of academic study for a Bachelor of Science in Nautical Science at the National Maritime College of Ireland.

The Cadets are from counties: Dublin, Donegal, Down, Meath, Waterford and Cork.

Deployment of LÉ WB Yeats
This will be the second Naval ship the Defence Forces has deployed to the Mediterranean this year where Defence Forces personnel have rescued over 16,000 people since operations began in 2015.

This is the first deployment of L.É. WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS to the Mediterranean; she has a crew of 59 sailors and is captained by Lt Comdr Eric Tymon.

The Ship was formerly commissioned as a warship in the presence of An Taoiseach and Minister of Defence in Galway on 17 Oct 2016.
