Brigadier General Joe Mulligan

Brig Gen Joe Mulligan is the General Officer Commanding (GOC) the Defence Forces Training Centre (DFTC), The Curragh, County Kildare. 

Military Experience

Brig General Mulligan joined the Defence Forces as a Cadet in November 1975. He was commissioned in October 1977 and posted to the 3rd Infantry Battalion at the Curragh.

His service has encompassed a wide range of appointments in operations, training and command & staff functions in Ireland and overseas.

He has worked at all levels of the Defence Forces from Platoon Commander to Infantry Battalion Commander. His appointments include Commandant of the Cadet School, Officer Commanding 3rd Infantry Battalion in Kilkenny, and most recently as a Director at Defence Forces Headquarters.

Overseas Experience

Brig General Mulligan has served overseas in the Middle East, Africa and the Balkans.


Brig General Mulligan is a graduate of the Military College and the Joint Services Command & Staff College at Shrivenham, UK where he completed an Advanced Command & Staff Course. He holds an MA from Kings College London and is also a graduate of NUIG, the National College of Ireland and NUIM. 


Joe Mulligan is originally from Dungarvan, Co.Waterford and educated at St Augustine’s College, Dungarvan. He is married to Edel with two sons and a daughter and lives in Co. Kildare

The Badge Design

The Badge design (common to all Corps and Services and all orders of dress) is derived from the badge of the Irish Volunteers and was designed by Professor Eoin MacNeill, Chairman of the National Executive of the Irish Volunteers.
