The Defence Forces is now accepting applications for General Service in both the Army and Naval Service.

Army applicants must be at least 18 years old and under the age of 25 years of age on the closing date for applications.

Naval Service applicants must be at least 18 years old and under the age of 27 years of age on the closing date for applications.

Both Competitions will close on Sunday 22nd April 2018.

General Officer Commanding, 2nd  Brigade

Brigadier General Howard Berney

Brigadier General Howard Berney assumed his appointment of Officer Commanding 2 Brigade in July 2016.


He attended primary school in Kilcullen and Killashee and secondary school in Newbridge College. He is a graduate of the Military College Command and Staff School and National University of Ireland  Maynooth University and holds a Masters of Arts in Leadership, Management and Defence Studies.

Military Experience

Brigadier General Berney joined the Defence Forces as a Cadet in November 1976. He was commissioned in December 1977 and posted to the 6 Infantry Battalion, Custume Barracks, Athlone.

His service has encompassed a wide range of appointments in operations, training and command and staff functions in Ireland and overseas;  incorporating service in the 3rd, 6th, 12th and 30th Infantry Battalions, the General Training Depot Curragh, Defence Forces Training Centre Headquarters Curragh, the Military College Curragh, and Defence Forces Headquarters.

Overseas Service

Brigadier General Berney he has served overseas in Lebanon, Kosovo, and Chad, additionally he was the Deputy Force Commander of the Swedish led EU Battlegroup in 2015.


Brigadier General Berney lives in Co. Kildare. He is married to Anne with two sons and a daughter

The Badge design (common to all Corps and Services and all orders of dress) is derived from the badge of the Irish Volunteers and was designed by Professor Eoin MacNeill, Chairman of the National Executive of the Irish Volunteers.
