National Memorial to Deceased Members of the Defence Forces who Died in Service
On 08 November 2008, President Mary McAleese unveiled the National Memorial to Deceased Members of the Defence Forces who died in service.
The memorial offers a fitting public recognition of the contribution and sacrifice made by members of the Defence Forces whether on home soil or on peace support operations overseas. It also serves as a tangible acknowledgement of the grief and bereavement of those they left behind.
This memorial serves to remind the public of the ultimate sacrifice made by those in uniform.
It's location at Archbishop Ryan Park, Merrion Square West, Dublin 2 combined with its design provide a peaceful place for reflection and remembrance, where families and members of the Defence Forces can remember loved ones and fallen comrades.
The memorial, designed by artist Brian King, depicts members of the four components of the Óglaigh na hÉireann: Army, Naval Service, Air Corps and Reserve cast in bronze standing guard over an eternal flame that emanates from the Defence Forces Badge at the centre of the structure.
The memorial is a pyramid shape made primarily of granite slabs resting on a steel frame with glass panels.
