Closure of Military Archives, 01 Mar to 31 May 2010
Military archives will be closed to the public during the above period to facilitate the vital tasks of stock-checking; rehousing of collections and archival processing. During the period, there will be no access by members of the public to Archives and researchers should plan accordingly. Queries can be sent by post to OIC Military Archives as usual. However, researchers are reminded that, as is the case in other archives, detailed research for individuals cannot be carried out by staff at Military Archives.

Defence Forces Military Archives
Located in Cathal Brugha Barracks, Rathmines, Dublin 6, the Military Archives is the place of deposit for the records of the Department of Defence, the Defence Forces and the Army Pensions Board under the terms of Section 14 of the National Archives Act 1986.
The function of the archive is to collect, preserve, and make available material relating to the history of the development of the Defence Forces from the formation of the Irish Volunteers in November 1913 to the present day, inclusive of overseas service with the United nations from 1958.

- The Collins papers 1919-21
- Liaison Documents (British Evacuation and Truce)
- Civil War operations and intelligence reports
- Captured Documents (IRA) 1922-24
- the Army Crisis 1924
- Volunteer Force Files
- Emergency Defence Plans 1939-46
- Military Intelligence 1939-46 and records of the Office of the Controller of Censorship
- Internment Camps
- Department of Defence files 1939-46
- Directorate of Operations
- Air Corps and Naval Service
The Archive holds in excess of 850 private collections.
