Monday 16 July 2012 - Private Patrick Kelly (RIP) To Be Awarded Military Star Medal.
The Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence Mr. Alan Shatter T.D. will posthumously award the Military Star Medal to the family of Private Paddy Kelly (RIP) who was killed on active service in Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim in 1983.
Private Patrick Kelly died alongside Garda Gary Sheehan while taking part in an Aid to the Civil Power operation to rescue a kidnapped businessman Mr Don Tidey. He died when the Army and Gardai personnel searching for the kidnappers were attacked. No one has been convicted in connection with his death.
As part of the ceremony the Minister will inspect a Guard of Honour, lay a wreath in memory of Private Patrick Kelly and award the citation and medal to members of the Kelly family.
Private Kelly's eldest son David will accept the framed citation from the Minister. One of his other sons, Corporal Andrew Kelly, a serving member of the Defence Forces will be presented with the medal on behalf of the family.
