Brigadier-General Patrick Flynn

Brigadier General Patrick Flynn is the General Officer Commanding 1 Brigade effective from 11 Feb 2017. Brigadier General Flynn was born in 1959 and joined the Defence Forces as a cadet with the 54th Cadet Class in 1977.

Military Service

On commissioning in 1977, Brigadier General Flynn was assigned to the Infantry Corps and began his career with the 6 Infantry Battalion, Athlone. Throughout his career, Brigadier General Flynn has served in key Command and Staff appointments at Battalion, Brigade and Defence Forces Headquarters level. Recent appointments include Instructor Command and Staff School, the Military College, Officer Commanding 3 Infantry Battalion, Stephens Barracks, Kilkenny, Executive Officer, Strategic Planning Branch, Defence Forces Headquarters, Second in Command & Executive Officer 1 Brigade, Collins Barracks Cork and more recently Director of Operations and Plans, Defence Forces Headquarters.

Overseas Service

Brigadier General Flynn has served overseas with the United Nations in Lebanon in 1984 and 1999, in Kosovo in 2005 and in Brussels where he was seconded to the European Union Council as part of the EU Military Staff between 2008 and 2011.

Education

Brigadier General Flynn was educated in Carrigaholt NS and St. Flannan’s College, Ennis. His military education includes the Command and Staff Course in the Military College, Defence Force Training Centre, the Senior Crisis Management Course in Sweden and the Combined Joint Taskforce Course in the Netherlands. He is a graduate of NUIG , DCU and NUI Maynooth, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree, a Diploma in Information Technology, and a Masters of Arts in Leadership, Management and Defence Studies respectively. Brigadier General Flynn is also a fluent French speaker having obtained a Certificate in French from the General Secretariat of the Council of the EU, while serving in Brussels.

Personal

Brigadier General Flynn who lives in Cahir, County Tipperary is a native of Carrigaholt, Co Clare and has a keen interest in sports. Brigadier General Flynn is married to Maria and they have one son, Neville.
