[Translate to Irish:] 7th September 2017 - Defence Forces Conduct Mission Readiness Exercise in Preparation for UNDOF (Golan Heights) Deployment.

[Translate to Irish:] Earlier today, the 56th Infantry Group completed the first week of their mission readiness exercise in preparation for their forthcoming deployment to the United Nations Disengagement Observation Force (UNDOF) in October 2017. This phase of training is a culmination of three months of intensive preparation for deployment overseas.

The Mission Readiness Exercise puts commanders and soldiers through a series of demanding scenarios based on potential threats that may be encountered in the mission area. Troops secured, extracted and evacuated personnel involved in a complex scenario.

The 56th Infantry Group will rotate into the mission area under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Dermot Hanifin. They have a wide range of capabilities including Armoured Force Protection, Patrolling and Mobility, Communications, Medical and Operational Expertise.

The Defence Forces first deployed to UNDOF in September 2013. The 56th Infantry Group are deploying a Group Headquarters, Two Mechanised Infantry Platoons, a Cavalry & Artillery Reconnaissance Troop and a Contingent Support Group totally 130 personnel to the Golan Heights. The Infantry Group will be carrying out peacekeeping duties under Chapter 6 of the UN Charter (Security Council Resolution 2294).

The 56th Infantry Groups’ primary responsibility is to act as the Force Reserve Company, under the direct command of the UNDOF Force Commander. The Forces Reserves Company’s responsibility is to maintain a Quick Reaction Force (QRF) and also a Reserve Force within Camp Ziouani at all times. The QRF is a small, highly mobile and flexible force which can respond to any request made by the Force Commander within 15 minutes.
