Wednesday, 18th October 2017 - Army Bomb Disposal Team Make Safe a Viable IED.

Earlier today, an Army Bomb Disposal Team made safe an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Rathkeale, County Limerick.

The Defence Forces deployed the Army Bomb Disposal Team following a request from An Garda Síochána. The Bomb Disposal Team arrived on scene at 12:17pm. To ensure public safety, a number of houses and local businesses were evacuated and a cordon was put in place for the duration of the operation.

The device was removed to a secure military installation for further examination at 2:06pm. Any items of an evidential nature will be handed over to An Garda Síochána to assist them with their investigations.

Should members of the public encounter such devices they are advised to maintain a safe distance and inform An Garda Síochána.

The Defense Forces Bomb Disposal Teams deal with other types of callouts that would include the destruction of a traditional munitions, such as old grenades found by members of the public, unstable chemicals and suspected devices that are found to be hoaxes.
