60 Years Peacekeeping1958 - 2018

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of Ireland's first Peacekeeping deployment in 1958.

Since then, Ireland have maintained the longest unbroken service on the front line of peace with over 70,000 individual tours of duty completed by the men and women of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

This year, we remember the 87 members of the Defence Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Peace.

Wednesday 06 May 2015 -Army Bomb Disposal Team detonates Commercial Explosives .

An Army Bomb Disposal Team detonated 5 Kg of commercial explosives found by a farmer outside the village of Leenaun Co Galway this afternoon.

The Defence Forces deployed the Army Bomb Disposal Team in response to a request from An Garda Sí­ochána after a farmer excavated the material whilst carrying out drainage on a piece of land.

The team arrived on scene at 12.30 pm and safely detonated the explosives, which were estimated to be at least 50 years old.

The scene was declared safe at 2.00 pm.

Should members of the public find such materials it is advised to keep a safe distance and inform An Garda Sí­ochána

Other types of call outs would include conventional munition destruction such as old grenades discovered by members of the public, unstable chemicals and also suspect devices found to be hoaxes.
