Army personnel deployed in Co. Limerick, Co Clare, Co Galway & Athlone Town to assist Local Authorities during severe weather period.

The Defence Forces are currently deployed on Flood Defence operations to assist the local authorities in the following areas:

  • Clonlara, Co Clare:  Two Sections of 15 troops and  2 Troop Carrying Vehicles (TCVs)
  • Castleconnell, Co Limerick: A Platoon of 30 troops and 4 TCVs
  • Ballinasloe, Co Galway: Two sections of 12 Troops and 2 TCVs
  • Athlone, Co Westmeath: A Platoon of 35 troops and 4 TCVs

Troops and transport assets remain on 'notice to move' Co Donegal, Galway, Athlone, Limerick and Cork.

Defence Forces mobility, manpower and specialist engineer assets remain available to assist our communities if required by local authorities.

Tuesday 8th December 

The Defence Forces are currently deployed to assist the local authorities in Claregalway, Lisheenavalla, Ballinasloe, (Galway) Castleconnell (Limerick) & Athlone Town (Westmeath) in the aftermath of Storm Desmond.

In Athlone 29 personnel from Custume Barracks are involved in the flood relief efforts, filling and distributing sand bags and a transport transporting people to and from homes that have been cut off by the flood water.

In Castleconnell 15 personnel from Sarsfield Barracks, Limerick are involved in building and reinforcing flood defences.

In Claregalway, Lisheenavalla & Ballinasloe personnel are involved in the filling and distribution of sand bags and a transport element remains on stand-by with high-axle vehicles.

Troops and transport assets remain on 'notice to move' in Finner Camp, Co Donegal, Dundalk, Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Cork.

The Air Corps have also flown Air Reconnaissance missions with members of the Office of Public Works to assess flooding.
