60 Years Peacekeeping1958 - 2018

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of Ireland's first Peacekeeping deployment in 1958.

Since then, Ireland have maintained the longest unbroken service on the front line of peace with over 70,000 individual tours of duty completed by the men and women of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

This year, we remember the 87 members of the Defence Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Peace.

Tuesday 24 April, 2012 - Army Bomb Disposal Team makes safe viable Improvised Explosive Device.

An Army Bomb Disposal Team made safe a viable Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in the Monksland area of Athlone this morning.

The Defence Forces deployed the team to a private residence in Sli an Coiste, Monksland, Athlone following a request from the Gardai.

The team arrived on scene at 09.45am where the device was examined and removed to a safe location; the scene was declared safe at 10.30am.

The device was made safe through the use of a controlled explosion on waste ground in the Athlone area.

This is the 68th call out and the 21st viable IED made safe by Army Bomb Disposal Teams so far this year.
