Tuesday 03 May 2016 - Ministerial Review of Lebanon Bound 53rd Infantry.

Minister of State at the Department of Defence, Mr Paul Kehoe T.D., accompanied by the Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, Vice Admiral Mark Mellett DSM, reviewed the 53rd Infantry Group in Kilkenny City today .
Commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Ryan, the 190 troops of the 53rd Infantry Group have been in training for the past two months and are scheduled to deploy to South Lebanon later this month with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Drawn primarily from James Stephens Barracks in Kilkenny, the 53rd Infantry Group will replace the 51st Infantry Group who deployed to Lebanon last November.
The ceremonial occasion consisted of a parade, Ministerial Inspection and address in Kilkenny Castle, followed by a march past the Town Hall in Kilkenny City.
Speaking during the Review, the Minister said “Ireland has a long record of contribution to UNIFIL since the mission was established in 1978 and our participation in this mission demonstrates our strong support for the role of the United Nations.”
Addressing the troops directly, Minister Kehoe said “I am sure that you will all endeavour to maintain Ireland’s reputation abroad and contribute to the high regard in which Ireland is held throughout the world.”
