60 Years Peacekeeping1958 - 2018

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of Ireland's first Peacekeeping deployment in 1958.

Since then, Ireland have maintained the longest unbroken service on the front line of peace with over 70,000 individual tours of duty completed by the men and women of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

This year, we remember the 87 members of the Defence Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Peace.

Tuesday 02 December 2014 - Army Bomb Disposal Team Rendered Safe a Viable IED.

An Army Bomb Disposal Team rendered safe a viable Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Co Offaly overnight.

The Defence Forces deployed the Army Bomb Disposal Team in response to a request from An Garda Sí­ochána after a suspect device was found at a private residence in the rural Fivealley area, near Birr.

A cordon and road closures were put in place for public safety and a nearby building was evacuated.

The team arrived on scene at 2.20 am. The device was made safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion. It was taken away for further examination and was confirmed as viable.

Items of an evidential nature will be handed over to the Gardaí­ to assist them with their investigation.

The scene was declared safe at 3.10 am.
