60 Years Peacekeeping1958 - 2018

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of Ireland's first Peacekeeping deployment in 1958.

Since then, Ireland have maintained the longest unbroken service on the front line of peace with over 70,000 individual tours of duty completed by the men and women of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

This year, we remember the 87 members of the Defence Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Peace.

Thursday 20th of October 2016 - Defence Forces Conduct Mission Readiness Exercise .

Today, the Defence Forces Chief of Staff, Vice Admiral Mark Mellett DSM, visited members of the 109th Infantry Battalion as they completed a Mission Readiness Exercise ahead of their deployment to South Lebanon next month.

The deployment of the 109th Infantry Battalion will see the Defence Forces increase the number of personnel deployed to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Ireland’s largest current overseas deployment, from 220 to 370.

The 109th Infantry Battalion will assume command of the multinational IRISHFINNBATT, which includes a company of soldiers from Finland and an Estonian platoon, when they deploy next month.
