60 Years Peacekeeping1958 - 2018

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of Ireland's first Peacekeeping deployment in 1958.

Since then, Ireland have maintained the longest unbroken service on the front line of peace with over 70,000 individual tours of duty completed by the men and women of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

This year, we remember the 87 members of the Defence Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Peace.

Thursday 11 February 2016 - Army Bomb Disposal Team Render Safe a Viable IED.

An Army Bomb Disposal Team made safe a viable Improvised Explosive Device (IED) outside a private residence in the rural Drumlane area of Co. Monaghan this evening.

The Defence Forces deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team on request from An Garda Síochána, after a suspect device was found by a member of the public.

A cordon was established and nearby homes were evacuated. The EOD team arrived at 3.55 pm and made the device safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion.

It was determined to have been viable and items of an evidential nature have been

handed over to the Gardaí to assist with their investigation.

The scene was declared safe at 4.35 pm.

Other types of call outs would include conventional munition destruction such as old grenades discovered by members of the public, unstable chemicals and also suspect devices found to be hoaxes.
