60 Years Peacekeeping1958 - 2018

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of Ireland's first Peacekeeping deployment in 1958.

Since then, Ireland have maintained the longest unbroken service on the front line of peace with over 70,000 individual tours of duty completed by the men and women of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

This year, we remember the 87 members of the Defence Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Peace.

Monday 26 August 2013 - Army Bomb Disposal Team Render Safe Viable Improvised Explosive Device.

An Army Bomb Disposal team rendered safe a viable improvised explosive device in Buncrana, County Donegal this afternoon.

The Defence Forces deployed a team to the scene by Air Corps AW -139 Helicopter following a request by Gardai, they arrived on scene at 2.30 pm.

The suspect object was found outside a private residence and a cordon was put in place with some evacuations of nearby houses carried out for public safety. The Team Leader carried out a manual approach to examine the device in situ and the device was then rendered safe by means of a controlled explosion.

The scene was declared safe at 3.40pm and the team returned to base.

All items of an evidential nature have now been handed over to the Gardai to assist them in their investigation of the incident.
