60 Years Peacekeeping1958 - 2018

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of Ireland's first Peacekeeping deployment in 1958.

Since then, Ireland have maintained the longest unbroken service on the front line of peace with over 70,000 individual tours of duty completed by the men and women of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

This year, we remember the 87 members of the Defence Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Peace.

Friday 15 May 2015​ - Death of RSM ​Steve Hickey​ (Retired).

On Thursday the 14th of May, the death sadly occurred of Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) Steve Hickey, a legendary figure in Irish horse sport particularly in the area of showjumping course building.

​Formerly of Clonmoney, County Clare, RSM Hickey (Retd) ​gave​ 42 years distinguished service​ to the Irish Defence Forces, the Irish Equitation School and Irish equine sport​.

RSM Hickey began his military career in 1943, when he joined the Construction Corps. One year later he transferred to the ‘Regulars’ and was subsequently posted to the Army Equitation School, rising through the ranks to reach Sgt Major in 1964. ​He ​traveled across Europe ​and the United States ​to many prestigious shows with the Army Equitation School such as Rome, Nice​, ​Aachen​,​ New York, Washington & Toronto.

RSM Hickey ​was ​also ​key to the administration of Irish equine teams at three Olympic Games at Rome, Mexico and Munich. This exposure to International Showjumping enhanced his interest in developing the skills of showjumping course building. Encouraged by the late L​ieu​t​enant​ Col​onel​ Ronnie MacMahon, RSM Hickey became ​the​ ​Irish national course builder attending horse shows throughout the country including the Main Arena in the RDS for the first occasion in 1978 and culminating in his appointment of course builder for the 1982 World Championships in Dublin.

After retiring from the Defence Forces in 1984, RSM Hickey continued to work as a successful International course builder.

RSM Hickey is survived by Nora his wife, his children; Michael, Paddy, Stephen, Mairead, Delia, Eilish and Dermot and loving family.

Reposing at Michael Doyle’s Funeral Home, Finglas. Removal on Monday morning to Our Mother of Divine Grace Church, Ballygall Road East for 10am Funeral Mass. Thereafter to Glasnevin Cemetery.
