Defence Forces conduct multi-national Staff training exercise at the Curragh.

Exercise Viking 11 is a multinational Peace Support staff training exercise, involving over 2,200 personnel from 28 countries (civilian and military). The exercise is being conducted across 7 sites in 5 countries (Ireland, Austria, Georgia, Ukraine and Germany). 

Viking 11, which is being run from the 07th to the 15th of April, is designed to enhance co-operation and co-ordination between the various organisations involved in Peace Support and Crisis Management operations. The Irish component of the exercise is taking place in the Defence Forces Training Centre, Curragh Camp.   

VIKING 11 is a joint civilian – police – military exercise. The scenario is based on a UN mandated Chapter VII Crisis Management Operation (CMO), which includes security assistance during parliamentary elections. A total of 80 civilians, including Representatives from the Department of Defence, Civil Defence, Garda Sí­ochána, Irish Aid, Irish Red Cross, Trocaire,  Concern and UNHCR are participating in the exercise alongside Defence Forces personnel.

Brigadier General Gerry Hegarty, General Officer Commanding the 4th Western Brigade, commands the Defence Forces staff, which consists of approximately 200 military personnel.

A visitors day for invited guests was organised on, 11th April 2011. Defence Forces Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Sean McCann, attended the exercise along with senior officials from the Department of Defence, Department of Foreign Affairs, the Honorary Consul to Sweden and resident Defence Attachés. Senior Military and Garda Officers in addition to CEO’s of Non Governmental Organisations were also be in attendance.
