2nd September 2017 - LÉ William Butler Yeats Rescues 41* Migrants During Two Separate Search and Rescue Operations .

Earlier today, following a request from the Italian Maritime Rescue Co-Ordination Centre, LÉ William Butler Yeats successfully located and rescued a total of 41* migrants during two separate search and rescue operations 42 nautical miles North West of Tripoli.

The first search and rescue operation began at 11.35am and all migrants are now on-board. They are receiving food, water and medical treatment where required.

LÉ William Butler Yeats is currently awaiting further tasks in the area of operations.

*Figures from today’s rescue will be confirmed by Italian authorities.

LÉ William Butler Yeats was commissioned on 17th October 2016 at a ceremony in Galway.

The role of the Irish Naval vessel is to provide a search and rescue capability and to undertake humanitarian rescue operations at sea in the Mediterranean. Assistance to persons in distress at sea is provided in accordance with the applicable provisions of international conventions governing search and rescue situations.
