26 Feb 2016 - Army Bomb Disposal Team Tasked Three Times.

Army Bomb Disposal Teams were tasked three times last night to render safe suspect devices and components in Mountrath Co Laois, Tallaght and Ballymun in Dublin.

Mountrath, Co Laois


The Army Bomb Disposal Team were requested to a location on the M7 Motorway near Mountrath, Co Laois where a suspect Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and firearms were found during a Garda led operation. The Army Bomb Disposal Team arrived on scene at 10.45 pm and the device, which was found to be viable, was made safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion. The scene was declared safe at  1.00 am this morning.

Killinarden, Tallaght

The Army Bomb Disposal were requested to tend to suspect items found during a Garda led search on a private residence in the Killinarden area of Tallaght. The team arrived on scene at 9.00 pm and the items were found to be 'IED making components.' The scene was declared safe at 10.30 pm.

Ballymun, Dublin

A suspect device was found outside a private residence in the Shangan area of Ballymun in the early hours of this morning. At the request of the Gardaí, the Army Bomb Disposal Team arrived on scene at 1.50 am. The device, which was assessed to be viable, was dismantled at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion. The scene was delcared safe at 3.30 am.

In all of the three aforementioned incidents, items of evidential nature were handed over to the Gardaí to assist them with their investigation.

Last year Army Bomb Disposal Teams responded to 145 call outs making safe 25 viable devices; this is the 13 call out and four viable devices so far this year.

Other types of call outs would include conventional munition destruction such as old grenades discovered by members of the public, unstable chemicals and also suspect devices found to be hoaxes.
