23 December 2013 - Army Bomb Disposal Team Renders Safe Viable Improvised Explosive Device.

An Army Bomb Disposal team rendered safe a viable improvised explosive device (IED) in the Bawnlee Area of Tallaght this afternoon.

The Defence Forces deployed the Team in response to a request from the Gardaí after a suspect device was placed inside the porch of a private residence.

The Team arrived on scene at 3.45pm and examined the device in situ. The Gardaí put a cordon in place and evacuated some nearby houses for public safety. The Team Leader opted to remove the suspect device to a nearby green area where it was subsequently rendered safe by means of a controlled explosion.

On further examination the device was declared a viable IED which means it had all the component parts to initiate and cause serious injury or loss of life. The scene was declared safe at 4.30pm and the Team have now returned to base. The remains of the device will now be handed over to assist Gardaí with their investigation into the incident.
