13 February 2015 - Army Bomb Disposal Team Render Safe a Viable IED.

An Army Bomb Disposal Team rendered safe a viable Improvised Explosive Device in Cork City this morning.

An Garda Siochána requested the Army Bomb Disposal Team after a suspect device was found in a private residence in the Knocknaheeny area of the city.

The team arrived on scene at 10.20 a.m. A cordon and traffic restrictions were put in place for public safety and a number of houses were evacuated during the operation.

A controlled explosion was carried out at the scene to render the device safe. The device was then removed to a military location for further testing and the scene was declared safe at 12.30 pm.

All items of an evidential nature will be handed over to the Gardaí to assist them with their investigations.

Other types of call outs would include conventional munition destruction such as old grenades discovered by members of the public, unstable chemicals and also suspect devices found to be hoaxes.
