09 Sept 2015 - Defence Forces Appointment.

The Defence Forces is pleased to announce that Colonel Kevin Cotter, the Director of the Defence Forces Strategic Planning Branch, has been appointed to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff (Support) with effect from the 29th of September 2015, when he will assume the rank of Major General.

Colonel Cotter has 40 years service and a wide range of experience since being commissioned into the Communications Information Services (CIS) Corps in 1975. He has held key appointments including instructor in the Military College and the Director of the Communications Information Services Corps.

He has extensive overseas experience having served three times with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in 1994, 1999 and 2000,  with the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1996, as a senior staff officer with the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) in 2006, in Kosovo in 2009 and with the European Union Military Staff (EUMS) in 2011.

As Deputy Chief of Staff (Support) Major General Cotter will be  responsible for the coordination of all support staff functions by developing and implementing policy, plans, guidance and procedures for the Army, Air Corps and Naval Service.

Major General Cotter was born in New York, moving to Limerick in his youth. He was educated in Crescent College Limerick and is a graduate of the Dublin Institute of Technology and the Command and Staff School, Military College.

He now resides in Co. Kildare. He is married to Marie and they have one son.
